Cloud Kitchens, What Are They and How Can You Own One?

A cloud kitchen is basically a restaurant kitchen that takes orders only through online ordering portals and offers no dine-in facility. They’re a restaurant that only delivers food to your doorstep.

These cloud kitchens can have their own websites or apps to accept online orders, or they can take the support of delivery apps such as Swiggy, Zomato, UberEats, etc.

With the rise in property rates and advancement of cloud technology, this was the only sensible move for the food industry and for entrepreneurs looking to have their own little cafe. Here’s what you’ll need, to start your own cloud kitchen.


 

Step 1: Location. Location. Location!

In the cloud kitchen model, you don’t have to think of the location in terms of footfall, parking space or high-end areas. It has a lot to do with proper sanitation and water supply with low rentals. Things to keep in mind while picking a location should be customer demography and the type of product that you want to sell. You’ll need a space of at least 600-700 sqft to work with ease and keep the place organised.
 

Step 2: What App will you sell on?

There are many online ordering and delivery platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato, Foodpanda, etc. that accept online orders on your behalf and also deliver the food to your customers. These companies usually charge 10-25% of your revenue per order. There is also a one-time integration fee involved for some FoodTech companies.

Step 3: Acquiring the Licenses

Licensing is an integral part of setting up a good restaurant. There are a couple of licenses which are extremely important to procure in the first month of operations for a hassle-free business. They are- FSSAI license, GST Registration, Municipal health trade licenses, fire licenses, etc. It is advised to hire an agency for applying for all the licenses because it is the most tedious and time taking task. And you know you’ll end up pushing this work to the side because you love cooking food, not the boring paperwork!
 

Step 4: Stock the kitchen -  Equipment, Raw Material, and Packaging 

The cost of setting up the kitchen may vary depending upon the cuisine and food you are offering. Some things you’ll have to invest in will be, a chimney, deep refrigerators, and burners. Play it smart and only buy what you need. Think of smart packaging ideas.

Behind a successful restaurant is the team that works for it. You’ll need at least at least two chefs, two helpers, and one housekeeper. Training is crucial to maintain hygiene and service expected from them.
 

Step 6: Marketing

Since everything is online, the marketing also works best online. Make sure that your online presence is felt and has a clear message about your brand of food. You’ve made it till the 6th step, there’s no stopping you now.
