Food On Naked Bodies, Could It Happen In India?

Imagine walking into an experimental cuisine restaurant in Mumbai and finding naked models lying down on buffet tables with a spread of Sweet Indian Delicacies served on their bodies. How would you react to it? Would you eat the jalebi that was served on a woman’s or man’s torso? It sounds insane to even imagine it, doesn’t it? Well, in Japan, there is a whole culture based on this ideal.

"...guests can nibble nori rolls off nipples if they choose!"

Nyotaimori, often referred to as "body sushi", is the Japanese practice of serving sashimi or sushi from the naked body of a woman. Nantaimori refers to the same practice using a male model.

The naked sushi idea began during the samurai period in Japan. It was a subculture to the geishas. It would take place in a geisha house as a celebration after a victorious battle. (Geisha are Japanese women who entertain through performance arts.)

As weird as this sounds, the Body Sushi practice also has rules- Guests must be respectful and observe the strictest decorum. Talking with the models is always highly discouraged. Inappropriate gestures or comments are not tolerated. And diners can only pick up sushi with chopsticks. Though, I read that the rules in some restaurants are less strict and in some restaurants, guests can nibble nori rolls off nipples if they choose!

This can definitely not be happening in India. Can you imagine the scandal if anyone tried it? Also, it would be impossible to pull this off even with all the rules because even though this practice is one of objectification, Indians would manage to take it to another level and make it impossible for the models to maintain their sanity.

Nyotaimori is just one of those things people just creepily want to experience on their trips abroad. Let’s hope that they don’t find it.
