Maharashtra Criminalising Food Adulteration With Maximum Punishment

The Maharashtra Legislature just cleared a bill criminalising food adulteration with maximum punishment! Maybe milk will be drinkable again, who knows.

Currently, the offence is bailable at Rs. 1000, with a maximum jail time of 6 months, and that’s not strict enough! The aim is to change it to a penalty of 5 Lakh with a minimum jail time of 10 years to life.
This is what we need. With adulteration reaching new levels every day, we need the F&B industry and the drug companies to value human life more than profits.



How are foods adulterated?
Mutton is swapped for beef because it’s cheaper and when ground, it tastes the same.
Adulterants in Milk are chalk, urea, caustic soda and skimmed milk.
Honey is adulterated with water and table sugar to increase bottle quantity.
Ice Cream adulterants are pepperonil, ethylacetate,butraldehyde, emil acetate, nitrate, washing powder and many more.
The Indian staple powdered rice and wheat is usually adulterated with starch.
Tomato sauces, mostly used in local fast food centres, are also artificially made from ‘pumpkin pulp’, ‘sugar’, ‘non-edible colours and flavours’

Nothing is safe enough to be eaten. Which is why this bill is so important.
