While mental health has been making headlines, there are has been a surge of suicides being reported. This incident, however, has stood out for its sheer innocence, for its faith in the system. A young girl shot herself, and in a suicide note went on to explain how the evils of our times pushed her to take this step. In a heartfelt letter addressed to Modi, she goes on to ask him to set things right. This move has caused the entire Nation to sit up and ponder, what is essentially wrong with society.
The suicide letter addressed to Modi
The girl hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal District, committed suicide on the eve of Independence Day. Soon after her demise, an 18-page suicide note was recovered by the police, which underlined pollution and corruption as the issues that had her distraught. In a first of its kind, the suicide letter was addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The note skimmed through several issues that were plaguing her young mind. She cited the rising levels of pollution in the country, seething corruption that has taken its deep roots in the medical field, further going on to express her concerns over the elderly being sent to old-age homes, saying she did not want to live in such a world. The young girl went on to urge Modi to get a grip on these issues and a headway in solving these crises, including population explosion.
While demographic experts have reemphasized time and again how impertinent it is to salvage the impending doom that will soon befall us if reproduction continues at this pace, the girl’s letter highlighted this. The suicide letter addressed to Modi asked him to focus on these crucial issues. Along with this, the letter also made a plea to Modi asking him to place a ban on crackers during Diwali and reduce the chemical colours during Holi. The girl goes on to express her desire to meet with the PM and discuss these pivotal issues with him. The parents have stated that as their daughter's last wish, they would make sure the letter reaches the PM's office.
The girl who is survived by her parents and three younger siblings, had been receiving psychiatric help from a doctor for some time., according to the police. The SHO of Gunnaur, Devendra Kumar, has stated that the girl had committed suicide by shooting herself on 14th August. The revolver used for this was recovered by the police and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A probe has also been launched.
One can only hope that the young girl’s thoughts which are echoed by every citizen of India today, will be heeded, and change will follow.
