Abortion Drugs Are Freely Sold Online! Pharma Body Raises Concern

The shocking part about this operation is that none of the buyers were asked for a prescription from a registered obstetrician or gynecologist.

The Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists Association has claimed that many online shopping websites are freely selling scheduled drugs for pregnancy termination without a prescription.

The MRPA members across the state ordered the pregnancy termination drugs from a known shopping website. While members from Pune received their orders in the past three days, a member from Nagpur received the package on Monday.

The shocking part about this operation is that none of the buyers were asked for a prescription from a registered obstetrician or gynecologist. A prescription is mandatory for buying these drugs in India. Moreover, the buyers were given an additional 20% discount on the printed price of the medicines.

The MRPA has now claimed that the shopping website has stopped the sales of this drug after they came to know about the campaign. In a statement, MRPA president Kailash Tandale said, “MRPA members have receipts as well as the medicine we received from the shopping website. However, the website has taken the hint and stopped the sale of this drug from June 2,”

While the big shopping website has stopped the sale, some small websites and online pharmacies are still selling it freely. Most of these websites insist on a pre-registration of the user but only a few of them ask you to upload prescription and submit age proof. Selling abortion pills without a prescription and age proof is illegal and is a punishable offense under the Medical Termination Of Pregnancy Act.

After the MRPA raised its concern, a number of government bodies are looking into the matter and are trying to come up with a verdict for the same.

We got in touch with Dr. Rita Fernandes who is a gynecologist to better understand as to why the sale of this drug is alarming. “Taking abortion pills without consulting a doctor is very dangerous. It can lead to major complications and may prove fatal in some cases. When considering an abortion, the only right way to do it is the legal way.” Says Fernandes.

We at Binge think that while a woman should have the right to do what she wants with her body, we would always advise doing things the right way. Consulting a doctor about abortion is the best and the only right way to do it.
