In a now-viral video, Republic TV chief Arnab Goswami has alleged that his car was attacked by Youth Congress workers while he was on his way back home with his wife in Mumbai.
Allegedly, the incident occurred two men on a bike had attacked his car while he and his wife Samyabrata Ray were returning to their home around 12.15 am on Thursday.
Goswami has quickly blamed the Congress and specifically Sonia Gandhi for sending goons to silence him. In the video, he’s seen claiming that the security guards who caught the two men outside his residence told him that the goons were sent upon the instructions of the higher-ups to attack him.
Arnab’s Tirade With The Congress
The incident has come to light after Republic TV launched a direct attack on the Congress leader. According to Arnab, Sonia Gandhi had orchestrated the Palghar lynching in which 3 men lost their lives. The journalist claimed that the Congress-Shiv Sena – NCP government tried to hide the lynching case from India. He even said on air that the “Italy wali” Sonia Gandhi would be happy that a sadhu was a victim of the lynching and that she’ll send a report to Italy that she’s successfully getting sadhus killed in a state where her party has formed the government.
The baseless claim was made by the reporter even after both the Maharashtra Home Minister and Chief Minister spoke that there was no communal angle to the unfortunate lynching seen in the state. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on even shared the list of 101 people taken into custody in connection with the lynching and said none of those arrested was Muslim.
Following the claims on the interim Congress chief, several congress party workers all over the country expressed their displeasure. A complaint was lodged by Congress leader Nitin Raut in Nagpur, on account of giving a religious and a communal colour to an unfortunate event. Similarly, an FIR was also registered against him in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur after several complaints by Congress workers.
The alleged attack on Arnab took place Hours after at least three FIRs him in two Congress-ruled states for controversial comments on his show against party president Sonia Gandhi and the Palghar lynching case.
Full Account Of The Attack On Arnab Goswami
The 5 long minute video has Arnab narrating the attack he faced while on his way back home around midnight.
In the video, Goswami said that 2 young men on a bike chased his car, and blocked his way by coming in front of him. They then tried to break the window panes of his car by smacking on it with some object. When this attempt failed, they threw some liquid-filled bottles and again tried to break the windows, post which the Republic Chief fled away towards his residence, which was just 500m away.
After this, he saw that his security personnel had caught the harassers. It is here where he says he got to know about the fact that the 2 men were actually Youth Congress workers, who had come to attack him on instructions of the higher command of the Congress party.
The video ends with Arnab Goswami saying that he’ll take strict action against the perpetrators and the Congress party. He ends with “I want to tell you, Sonia Gandhi, you are the biggest coward in the country right now...You have no guts to face me...I will hold you personally responsible for any consequences of any attack on me. If anything were to happen to me, it is Sonia Gandhi who is responsible.”
The Latest Update
As promised, Arnab was present at the NM Joshi Marg Police Station to file a Police complaint. However, the Mumbai Police has refused to name Youth Congress as attackers in the FIR. Two people, however, have been arrested in relation to the crime. Additionally, details on the identity of the youths, including their names, have not been made public yet, either by the police or by Goswami.
What is surprising is how 2 men on a bike managed to create such chaos for the journalist. Goswami is among a handful of editors who are provided security by the government. Surprisingly, his Y Category’ police protection was so easily overpowered by the men.
Meanwhile, in a rare show of support for the press in India, the BJP top brass was quick to condemn the attack on the journalist. Party Chief JP Nadda tweeted “Shocking to see Arnab Goswami attacked after Congress chief ministers publicly threatened him, “Sad to see such public hounding of a journalist for his freedom of speech. [The] Congress shows it is the party that brought Emergency and continues its rich tradition of trampling free speech.”
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar was also seen lending his support. “This is against democracy and it is ironical that those who preach tolerance have become so intolerant. Therefore we condemn this attempt,” he said.
At a time when India is constantly slipping down the World Freedom Press Index, such an incident on a journalist if true is highly condemnable. ON the fact of who is responsible for such an attack and whether it was organized by the Congress, adequate judgement should be reserved until the investigation is complete. A thorough and comprehensive investigation is the need of the hour for sure.
