As with every trend, there is speculation surrounding this one too. CBD for pets or CBD for dogs is claimed by some as the magic cure to the ailments worrying your pooch while another sector of people stand by the fact that there is not much information to support this claim. Are you in a dilemma about what to do? Here is everything you should know before giving your dog CBD oil. We got an expert on board too, so there’s no room for doubt.
What is ‘CBD oil’??
CBD is essentially cannabidiol, which is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis. However, it should not be confused with marijuana, which contains high levels of the psychoactive compound THC. CBD oil is an extract of the Cannabis indica or the Cannabis sativa plant, diluted with a carrier oil to yield the final product.
The bottled oil is claimed and proved to have an array of benefits owing to its pain-relieving properties. In fact, it isn’t just the oil that has taken the market by storm but also CBD gummies, CBD capsules, and under-tongue CBD sprays.
When it comes to the interaction of the CBD oil with dogs, here is what is known:
- The brain of canines has abundant endocannabinoid receptors present
- These receptors are also abundant in the central and peripheral nervous system of the animal
- The cannabinoids present in CBD bind to these receptors
- The binding influences a positive state in the animal
Is it okay to give CBD oil to pets?
As pointed out, there are two sides to this argument. Some anecdotal evidence by pet parents suggests that CBD oil is magic in a bottle when it comes to helping their pet with medical conditions. Others are sceptical about it as they are wary of the ‘high’ it may leave the dog with.
“The CBD oil is safe,” says Daanish - the Founder of Cure By Design, a company aimed at incorporating hemp and its derivates in therapeutic blends and personal grooming products as well as pet CBD products.
“CBD oil will not leave your dog with a ‘high’ as it contains negligible amounts of the psychoactive ingredient THC.”
How much CBD oil should you give your pet?
The Internet will give you all sorts of theories about how much of a dosage of CBD oil you should be giving your pets. Hear it from the retailer himself. “The dosage is based on the pet’s body weight. It is between 2-8 drops. This is not a daily dose. If you are planning on giving your dog 2 doses (twice a day), both doses would have to be between 2-8 drops each.”
Can CBD oil be given to pets with anxiety?
As a calming stimulant, CBD oil can be given to pets in doses recommended by the veterinarian. The oil gives your pet some much-needed relief from chronic anxiety and helps them relax. The component responsible for this calm is the anti-anxiety cannabinoids present.
Daanish sides with this claim saying that they have received an overwhelming response when the CBD oil was used for dogs. “It is extremely helpful when it comes to helping anxiety that these creatures face, especially separation anxiety. In fact, pet parents who are travelling out of the state with their fur babies, give them a few drops of the oil and the pet does not have any form of anxiety during the car trip.”
It isn’t just a handful of these positive responses, says Daanish. “We have pet parents calling us with their doubts and then they call back with their feedback, telling us that the CBD oil has helped their dog’s car anxiety, grooming anxiety and it’s great. It is satisfying to see your product work so well at what it was aimed to do.”
A pet parent who has used the CBD oil in order to calm her dog down during a seizure, says it is a great option. “I have been giving Brando 8 drops twice a day every day. On days when he gets a seizure, I give him 8 drops thrice a day and it has controlled the cluster attacks completely! It is a relief for pet parents who previously felt helpless when their pets were in pain.”
What are the benefits of CBD for pets?
Numerous ways your precious pet can benefit from having himself a little CBD oil. The oil that is known to calm down dogs or cats is also a great help in the following conditions:
- Chronic pain in hip and joint
- Digestive issues
- Reducing seizures
- Muscle tension
- Neurological support
What are the side effects of CBD oil?
As with every medication, the dosage of the CBD oil too needs to be monitored. Always start with a few drops in order to check for an adverse reaction before you give the full dosage. The possible side effects of CBD for pets are :
You may find your dog thirsty after having the CBD oil. This is because the oil decreases the production of saliva, leaving your pooch with a dry mouth.
Low blood pressure
Dizziness may follow as CBD oil lowers blood pressure.
In higher doses, the CBD oil may cause drowsiness in your pooch. This is also due to the calming effect it has on the nerves.
What are the legalities of giving CBD oil to animals?
“There is a difference that exists between hemp and marijuana, the female plant. This has the bud that is abundant in nutrition. The hemp plant has seeds that much more prominent and these are of nutritional value,” says Daanish, continuing to say that they source most of their hemp products from Uttarakhand, a state where hemp cultivation has been legalized.
“Unfortunately, when it comes to CBD, the Indian varieties of the plant are more dominant in THC - the psychoactive compound, and hence it is expensive to extract it here in India and thus we import it.”
The CBD isolate, which is essentially CBD in powder form is imported from the United States and then tinctures are produced for dogs from this raw material. The company also has third-party lab reports that provide credibility.
Daanish explains that in India, any compound with a THC concentration of less than 0.3% is considered legal. “People still do look at hemp as marijuana and bud and link it to smoking. Hence, our go-to-market strategy is a little different from an OTC (over the counter) sale. We are closely associated with 28 veterinary hospitals in Bangalore and a few pet experts such as Georgina’s kitchen that is one of the biggest in the country.”
“The aim is to make CBD affordable as it is a growing market. Thus, working with doctors gives this CBD oil credibility. You’d of course take it seriously if a doctor recommended it, right?” says Daanish signing off.
