Cobbler Scam : An Act Of Kindness Gone Wrong

It truly is a tough life to live on the streets, but sometimes trying to help someone may rebound.

If you’re any decent person living in the city, you’d look around to all the beggars and all poor people living on the streets, performing services that they earn the bare minimum from and have pity on them. It truly is a tough life they live. On the streets people usually insult them,  the cops are always found harassing them, they seem to be stationed in unsanitary spots and much more. Moreover, there are a lot of people who look at them and try to help them out and with the help of social media, many such stories come out. Most of the times striking a conversation with them and giving some extra money might do some good but sometimes kindness easily rebounds!

Recently, a woman in Mumbai shared an overwhelming story of this boy who offered to clean her shoes on her twitter account (@agentgreenglas). She tweeted about how this boy approached her in Linking road, Bandra asking if he could clean her shoes. As she refused, he went on to tell her that he had found no customers since the morning and was very hungry. So she decided to help him out by offering a street snack. As the boy binged on his snack, he insisted to clean her shoes as he didn’t want to eat for free. The lady overwhelmed by his demeanor and his grasp on the english language instead asked him to have a conversation with her.

He went on to tell her that he was from a Rajasthan and his dad used to sell maps to tourists, which is why he could speak good english. But his father used to hit his family and they decided to run away from him and come to the city. They started living in a slum near the station and he figured he could earn money from cleaning, polishing and repairing peoples shoes. He then explained to her, how an actual shoe repair kit would help him survive. Moved by this, she had scheduled to meet up with him and buy the kit for him, worth ?1800. She also asked if someone could employee him in her tweets. Even the actor Parineeti Chopra tweeted a response praising the woman and that she could help him find a job.

Many people on the social platform started to praise her for her kind gesture towards the boy. But then the warning tweets started coming in. They started warning her about the probability of the whole thing being a scam and to take an action after clearer evaluation. A video then surfaced from youtube, where three foreigners seemed to debunk this scam. They explained how someone innocent would buy this kit for the boy and when gone, he would return the kit and get half the money back, essentially earing from it!

There are a lot of tricksters on the streets, so the next time you decide to do a kind deed, look closer into the matter. Sometimes people profit off other people's kindness. While there are a lot of people who actually need our help, it always pays to be smart!
