Dating Stories That Will Show You The Good And Quirky Of Online Relationships

Dating stories in 2021 come with their share of fun, romance, hilariousness and absurdity, but then again, so does love.

This is the age of the Internet. Libraries have taken a back seat and eBooks the front, markets and shopping have become a thing of the past and ordering supplies online now reign. So when it comes to love, why should it be any different? That’s just what online dating had in mind when it stormed into the market and in the recent past made great strides. But finding love by swiping right and tapping a screen obviously has its quirks. Dating stories in 2021 come with their share of fun, romance, hilariousness and absurdity, but then again, so does love. We caught up with couples and asked them to share whether the road to meeting the soulmate was a straight path or a winding one, and well, they are one hell of a story!

Why are online dating stories starting to be much more successful than in previous years?

The emergence of online dating began with one purpose, to give people the chance to interact with others through methods that weren’t the conventional ‘stumbling into one another while grabbing coffee’, or the Bollywood movie style ‘books falling in the library and discovering your soulmate was the one who picked them off the floor’. The aim was to help people still find love even when they did not have the chance of meeting someone in the course of work or college or parties. In recent years, the success of online dating has picked up speed and quite well for a society that believes in love being about locking eyes across a room or having the dupatta stuck in the guy’s wristwatch.

The ease and efficiency of using these dating apps and interfaces increase one’s probability of finding THE ONE and broaden the dating horizon. But online dating isn’t all about swiping right the very first time and landing on someone who will be the person you end up with. Contrary to this, it’s a hilarious feat sometimes and other times, romantic to say the least. Here are couples who have some interesting stories to share.

What’s your share of funny dating stories?

Harsh has had funny, annoying and to say the least, weird dating stories. He recounts one event where he went on a date and the girl brought along a chaperone. (No, Harsh wasn’t a minor.). They’d met off Tinder and the chaperone (ironically) got real drunk and that pretty much was the end of the date. Except, it wasn’t. The friend was almost on her way to puke in Harsh’s car, which they thankfully managed to avoid and took her to a restaurant instead and waited with her in the room until she felt better. Since you’re wondering, the date did not go as planned but wasn’t a complete blowoff either. Harsh and the said girl at whom he swiped right, ended up spending the night in the other room (just talking) while the chaperone got some beauty sleep. We never saw the night panning out like this, but well.

Speaking about the other dates that he met through dating platforms, Harsh says he has experienced it all. Right from one who wanted to straight-up get married to another who self-declared that she was only there for the free food to another who sharpened her stalker skills when she was with him. “Another was a dom, so she wanted me to wear a belt or something of those sorts on our date, which of course I refused.” He goes on to say that one was actively looking for marriage proposals while one even ended up being his teacher a few years later. (!!)

Did your dating story lead you to your soulmate?

Neil Azavedo tells us the story of how he got hooked, booked and cooked! It all started during the pandemic where the first three months left many feeling absolutely isolated due to the void of human contact. This was especially true for those who lived by themselves and Neil was no exception. Having tried online matchmaking sites before with no great results, he had given up on the idea of anything working out in his favour but that’s just when things started to look up!

“I created an account on a popular matrimonial site and within a couple of weeks, I chanced upon Archana. She was different from the others,” says Neil as he recounts hilarious episodes of the previous matches he’d made with others on these platforms. “The previous ones either looked like my mother or were positively close to her age! The pictures were a tale of their own. But when it came to Archana, the picture stood out. I still remember my first question to her, which was ‘When did you click this?’” Archana’s reply had Neil knowing for certain that she was THE ONE. “Two days ago.”

“We took it from there and it was great getting to know each other,” says Neil. The two of them did have their fair share of fun and uncertainty that comes with meeting someone online and beginning a relationship with them. “On the fifth day, Archana asked me what was my final decision” quips Neil as he remembers how he was thrown off guard at how he was supposed to make a life choice in 5 days when even deciding the brand of teabags takes him anywhere between a week to two.

“Today, we are happily married,” say the couple, giving you who’s reading this, the hope that fairytales do come true even if instead of a glass slipper, it is a click or two that does the magic. “It all started online for us. And now it’s even more fun offline!”

Have you found love at first swipe?

Before Varsha tells us about her fairytale online story coming true, she sets the scene with one of how she thought her then relationship felt like it would be forever. “We literally had our first kiss at an Ed Sheeran concert with the star crooning at us from the stage, and as a magnificent display of fireworks lit up the sky. So, to my cynical heart, it seemed like I’d just walked into the most overused rom-com trope ever, but at the same time like we were destined to be together forever. But then, life happened and that relationship didn’t last very long.”

As Varsha was recovering from the painful breakup, a friend of hers who was tired of seeing her mope around, created an online dating profile for her. She swiped right a few times and had half-hearted conversations that bored her and decided to take a hiatus from the online love scene. When she got back to it, Michael was waiting for her.

“After my first date with Michael - which started with dinner that then turned into a 4-hour walk by the river (I lived right next to one) - I’d already decided to call off the second dates with the other guys. With Michael, the conversation was effortless and laughs plentiful. Within a week he’d asked me to be his girlfriend, and within 5 months of meeting each other, we were engaged and a year later, we were married. It might seem quick, but it really is true that when you know, you know.”

She recounts how she’d joke with him about how she’d always wanted to marry a chef so that she’d get great food without having to cook, and Michael decided to make the dream come true! “During the pandemic, he started learning how to cook and he’s getting really good at it. And now, he’s a wonderful father to our 10-month-old son, who absolutely adores him.”

All this, she says, because she decided to take a chance on online dating. And the icing on the cake? “The friend who created my online profile - she was the maid of honour at our wedding.”

...And they lived happily ever after!
