DRI Seizes 52.5 Kgs Narcotics Worth 6 Crores In Hyderabad

In a startling incident, which seems to have borrowed its plot from a dark movie, the DRI has seized 52.5 kgs narcotics worth 6 crores in Hyderabad

In a startling incident, which seems to have borrowed its plot from a dark movie, the DRI has seized 52.5 kgs of narcotics worth 6 crores in Hyderabad. This stash was found buried underground in a compound in the outskirts of the city.

52.5 kgs narcotics seized

On Wednesday, a total of 45 kg of Ephedrine, a controlled substance, and 7.5 kg Mephedrone, a psychotropic substance, was seized. The value of the seized narcotic drugs by the DRI, amounted to Rs 6 crore in the grey market. The confession of three individuals who had been arrested by DRI earlier led to the seizure. The narcotics are popular among the urban youth and if abused have effects similar to cocaine.

Mephedrone as a narcotic

Mephedrone, colloquially known as bath salt, drone, M-CAT, Meow Meow etc., is known for its effects as a psychoactive, recreational drug. It does not have any medicinal use and once consumed, leads the user to feel ecstatic, beyond control. However, these feelings of joy are short-lived and once the effects wear off, paranoia, heart palpitations, damage to the nasal passages, follow. It should be noted that some have suffered the fatal effects of the drug and died under its influence.

This Central Nervous System stimulating drug can be psychologically addictive. Made form Cathinone, a naturally occurring stimulant found in the khat plant of East Africa, the drug is an unregulated substance that mimics existing drugs. These NPS have altered chemical structures, and are sometimes called legal highs because the change in chemical means they are no longer illegal. Some countries have adapted their drug laws and made such drugs illegal, regardless of their exact chemical content.

Mephedrone comes in the form of tablets, capsules, or white powder and users can swallow, snort, or inject it, but snorting is the most common way of taking the drug.

Ephedrine as a narcotic

Ephedrine on the other hand is a highly sought-after chemical in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine. Though used for medical purposes such as treating breathing problems and nasal congestion, a high dose can cause psychosis. The drug is sold as an over-the-counter medication in liquid and tablet form, for cough and flu remedies. The side-effects are weight loss and causes alertness and an increase in energy. This property is often exploited by bodybuilders.
