Indians Tell Us What It’s Like to Get High With Their Parents

Bingedaily spoke to Indians who've done the impossible - convinced their parents to smoke a J with them and gotten really high after.

For most Indians, smoking weed with their parents is sort of unthinkable. Even if their parents were potheads back in the day or are mildly aware of their children’s occasional meeting with Mary-Jane, it's likely that this knowledge will never translate into an actual smoking pot session. Part of the reason why is because weed carries a stigma in the country - we clearly saw that with how it was being discussed in mainstream media. Weed activists and stoners, though, argue that weed has been an integral part of Indian culture. They point to mentions of it in ancient scriptures and religious uses, saying that people have been lighting spliffs for ages.

Despite our close history with the substance, marijuana is considered to be an illegal drug under Indian law and people usually tend to focus on its harmful effects. The youth is trying to advocate for marijuana legalization by breaking stereotypes attached to weed and speaking about the cannabis plant's health uses as medical marijuana and hemp which is used in several industries. However, talking about marijuana with your parents is very different from convincing them to ingest marijuana edibles with you or smoke the cannabis plant.

While most of us wait till midnight to spark a J or have to master the art of acting sober at home after smoking up, there are some who have reached the peak of adulthood by sharing a J with their parents. Bingedaily spoke to Indians who've broken that awkward barrier with their parents and convinced them to smoke a doob. So, maybe you can retell these stories to your parents, hoping to inspire them to do the same.

We ended up getting mega-blazed together. Five joints later and he goes "Man, why did I ever quit?". He's been smoking daily ever since.

My dad was an avid weed smoker in his early 20s but quit the habit after I was born. Now, I am 25 years old. Last year, he was going through a divorce and he and my mom were living separately so I had gone to visit him for a few days. After dinner, I was smoking a joint on the balcony and he comes out and asks me for a toke so I go, "Uh, yeah sure" and we ended up getting mega-blazed together. Five joints later and he goes, "Man why did I ever quit?". He's been smoking daily ever since. I feel a bit bad for being a bad influence but then again his entire personality is so much more relaxed and it's taken a lot of his stress from the divorce away so it can't be a bad thing! - Sakshi*, 25

I loaded my bong, held and lit it for my mom so that she could take a decent hit. She coughed like crazy but immediately started cracking up.

I grew up in a pretty anti-drug household. My parents drank but were very against marijuana and everything else. My brothers used to get caught with weed a lot growing up and my parents would be absolutely livid. I started smoking when I was 15 but luckily, never got caught.

When I was 21 and had returned home from college for winter break, I would smoke up at home too. One afternoon, my mom found my bong and asked me about it. She wasn't angry, she simply asked me in a calm manner. I told her I only do it occasionally. That's when I learned that she was quite the stoner in college. She started reminiscing and telling me about her experiences with marijuana at university. I offered for her to smoke with me and the next thing I knew, I was helping my mom take a bong hit. I loaded my bong, held and lit it for my mom so that she could take a decent hit. She coughed like crazy but immediately started cracking up.

For the rest of the night, we talked, watched TV, and ate so many snacks. We started to talk about her childhood and other things about her past. Apparently, she had a previous husband, which I never knew about. Her father had died when she was 11 and her brother had died when she was 13. I got to know her so much better and it made me realize how the weed allowed us to open up and bond. I had never been so close to her but I feel like we really enhanced our relationship over that session - it was a nice experience. - Rishabh*, 23

I love watching my mom high and act all silly. I get stupid with her too and we laugh over nothing.

The first time I smoked weed with my mom, we laughed a lot but neither of us remembers what made us laugh. Before, when I was in high school she used to have a problem with me smoking because she thought it would interfere with my studies. But she started to understood why I smoked marijuana when she started doing it as well.

Now, we smoke up once in a while and I love doing it with her. My sister doesn’t like to get high with her because she feels it’s quite weird to smoke with our parents.I love watching my mom high and act all silly. I get stupid with her too and we laugh over nothing. We have crossfaded also and when she drinks and smokes, she gets too wild, it’s crazy to watch but I love it cause she is having fun. - Neha*, 21

My dad grabs the joint, examines it closely under the light, smells it right up against his nose, and then all of a sudden lights the burner of the stove and then proceeds to light the joint.

I'm in my mid-30s right now and have been smoking cannabis since I was 14 years old. I knew that my parents were open-minded and quite educated on the subject of marijuana intoxication, they never advocated for it to me and my sister.

So, a few years earlier, when I was visiting home for the holidays with my now wife, something strange happened. I had carried a stash with me home as my wife and I love to smoke up. While I was there, my sister found my stash of joints decided to out me to my parents.

My parents didn't really care since I was an adult who didn't live at home anymore. I told them, I use it responsibly and would never smoke inside the house. They just said to keep it out of sight of the neighbours as it could lead to a legal issue. From there, we started talking about cannabis in general, new research on it and will it be legalized here. My dad asks me to show him the stash I go get my stash and pre-rolled joints and show it to them.

My dad grabs the joint, examines it closely under the light, smells it right up against his nose, and then all of a sudden lights the burner of the stove and then proceeds to light the joint. He hits it and passes it to my mom. My wife and I are looking at one another silently mouthing "WTF" to one another, is this reality? It was the first time I was smoking with my parents, that too inside the house. But after that, we didn't do it again as they rarely smoke now.

A few years later I did get to smoke with my dad two more times before he passed away 2 years ago. He told me about the good old days, his youth, and smoking with his buddies. He said that he always loved cannabis but had to "grow up" when they had me. This moment just kinda stuck with me since I think it was really the first and only time I ever had a true heart to heart conversation with my dad regarding life. - Ashish*, 35

These stories are quite heartwarming but for some, getting stoned with your parents can be totally bizarre or could even lead to a weird trip. So, why would anyone want to do it? Well, it can help you view your parents as individuals rather than authority figures. There's also a feeling of friendship and understanding that arises from family toking or even drinking with them. There's a sense of being seen as an adult and being treated accordingly. However, don't feel pressured to do it unless you truly want to as it's not the only way to bond with them. But if both of you have are comfortable enough with each other, smoking a J could be a plausible activity for a family weekend.
