How Indians Are Surpassing The Porn Ban

When the government ordered Internet Service Providers to block 827 porn sites on October 27, no one was bothered. Find out how India is coping!

When the government ordered Internet Service Providers to block 827 porn sites on October 27, almost no one was bothered. While ISPs did block the aforementioned sites, this has had little to no impact on Indian porn consumption. However, there are several ways to bypass this. We took it upon ourselves to find out how India is coping with the porn ban.

Increased VPN Downloads

In what can be only described as a radical increase, VPN (virtual private network) downloads grew by 405% since the porn ban. A VPN allows users to mask their IP address and location, hence being able to access ISP-blocked websites with relative privacy.

"Everyone should use a VPN," says Shivam, 22. "There will be countermeasures to porn ban. Plus, browsers like Opera offer VPN built-in."

Several other people asked also said they use a VPN to access popular porn sites and be able to see trending videos in other countries.

Ineffectiveness Of The Porn Ban

Soon after the ban, a number of proxy sites for the blocked list of sites popped up, with alternate domain names so that users can continue accessing their content from India. With the second-largest population and the largest youth population, India is a huge target consumer for the porn industry.

It is impossible for the government to keep up with the various mirror and proxy sites that can pop up every time a new one is blocked. A similar case has been seen with pirated streaming services and torrent websites.

Plus, there are several websites that were never included in the block list at all. These tend to be less popular, shadier. Hence they are increasingly likely to have disturbing or even illegal content as compared to a well-established site like PornHub. A quick judgement of web traffic and searches shows that 11 out of the top 50 most visited websites are porn servers.

Offline Resources

For the less tech-savvy parts of the population, there exists a huge grey-market for pornographic material. A CD is available for as low as 30-40 Rupees and today suppliers offer to upload material to flash drives for the same price. The lack of regulation over such a market makes it a dangerous industry due to the possibility of trafficking and the use of minors.

Hence, the porn ban has had little to no impact on the actual consumers amongst the population. People have several ways to work around it, and the regulation over these only ends up lesser than before. Perhaps authorities should consider taking steps towards healthy sexual education and awareness instead of fruitless bans that change practically nothing.

Here is an article that details about the recent pornhub survey from 2019.
