The new Global Prosperity Inclusive Index, that ranks 113 cities by social and economic inclusivity, placed Bangalore at #83 worldwide. The only other Indian Cities that make the cut are Delhi and Mumbai, at #101 and #107 respectively.
The first of its kind, Prosperity & Inclusion City Seal and Awards (PICSA) Index ranks Zurich at first place. Instead of just judging by the economic prosperity of the city, this index also measures the distribution of wealth. Hence, a more holistic view of the development of the city is presented.
The Index was formed on the basis of several factors including quality of life, safety, health, and education, to give a broader perspective as to the state of the city. Unsurprisingly, 15 out of the top 20 cities are European cities, plus four North American ones and Taipei at #6.
At first, it may seem odd that Bangalore and Delhi would rank above Mumbai on well, any kind of index. However, considering the focus on equality and inclusivity, it becomes clear how this happened.
Especially Mumbai, but Delhi as well, has huge regions and populations composed entirely of low-income sectors living in temporary housing, such as slums. This is not so much the case with Bangalore, which enjoys the benefits of more modern and planned development as a city.
