Income Tax Department Questions Anurag Kashyap, Taapsee Pannu

Actress Taapsee Pannu and film maker Anurag Kashyap are being questioned by income tax officials in Pune.

The Income Tax department’s investigation unit raided properties associated with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actress Taapsee Pannu in Mumbai over alleged tax evasion. Thus, searches were conducted in 30 locations of Mumbai and Pune, including places linked to a talent agency Exceed Entertainment (which manages Saif Ali Khan) and KWAN (which manages Deepika Padukone).

Searches were carried out in Phantom Films, which is owned together by Kashyap, and three others- director-producer Vikramaditya Motwane, producer Vikas Bahl and producer-distributor Madhu Mantena.

Thus, Taapsee and Anurag are being questioned by income tax officials in Pune.

Prakash Javadekar who is the Information and Broadcasting Minister during a BJP briefing said, "The Income Tax department probes someone based on whatever information they get. The issue goes to court later."

However, this raid has been criticized by many and has been linked as a tactic of the ruling government to attack the dissenters who have actively spoken against them.

Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik said, "The way in which raids were conducted in the homes and offices of Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu, this is definitely the usage of Enforcement Directorate or the Income Tax against those who take a stand against the government or its policies. Anurag Kashyap and Tapasee Pannu have raised their voice against the Modi government's policies. This action is an attempt to suppress their voices."

Ashok Chavan who is a Congress leader and Cabinet minister described this income tax raid as a retaliatory act of the Modi government.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav called it a "condemnable act" and scorned the centre.

They first employed IT, CBI, ED to conduct raids on vocal & upright political rivals for their character assassination.

Now Nazi govt is chasing social activists, journalists & artists to threaten them against calling spade a spade.

Condemnable Act! @taapsee @anuragkashyap72

— Tejashwi Yadav (@yadavtejashwi) March 3, 2021

These allegations were called unrelated and were rejected by Prakash Javadekar. He said, “It is strange that everything is connected to politics. Agencies do their work based on their own assessments.”

BJP MLA Ram Kadam too spoke in favour of the raids on Kashyap and Pannu and said, “The action is carried as per the law, it is unfortunate that Congress and other leaders are giving a political colour to this issue.”

Twitter Bursts Into A Meme Fest After The Income Tax Raid

Often, any issue in limelight is turned into a meme fest by  Twitter users. Similar was the situation, where several users added a moment of humour to the raids, while some supported the view that it was a consequence of being opinionated against the Modi government.

Anurag Kashyap And Taapsee Pannu Being Strong Critics Of The Centre

There is no doubt on the fact that Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu have constantly voiced their opinion against the Modi government.

During the farmers’ movement when international icons like Rihanna and Greta extended their support to the protests on Twitter through a single tweet, the ruling government condemned this and called it an intervention in India'sinternal matters.’ Subsequently, several Indian celebrities who were silent for months came out and supported the agendas of the government.

Thus, Taapsee was one of the few celebrities who outrightly questioned this solidarity and took a jibe at the sudden outrage of Indian celebrities over ‘one tweet.’

If one tweet rattles your unity, one joke rattles your faith or one show rattles your religious belief then it’s you who has to work on strengthening your value system not become ‘propaganda teacher’ for others.

— taapsee pannu (@taapsee) February 4, 2021

Anurag Kashyap too has been outspoken against the Modi government,  criticizing the ways of the government suppressing dissent and the centre inducing violence on the anti-Citizenship Act protesters in 2019. In 2020, he also extended support to Rhea Chakraborty in the Sushant Singh Rajput case and slammed the silence of Bollywood.

Kashyap and Pannu, who collaborated together in the 2018 film “Manmarziyaan" will  now in the upcoming film “Dobaara."
