This week, we were lucky enough to find some time with Malavika Mohanan, the leading lady in Majid Majidi’s Hindi debut ‘Beyond The Clouds’. This being her Hindi debut as well, there’s a lot that people don’t know about her. So we at Binge decided to ask questions about her story and her thoughts on food. Here’s how that went:
Q . So Malavika, could you tell us about your journey so far. How did you come to become an actor?
A : I actually had no plans as such to become an actress. It started with me getting an offer to star in a movie with Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan which later released as my first film ‘Pattam Pole’. Since then, I decided to take this endeavor seriously and went on to do 2-3 other films in the South. Then one fine day, I received a call from Mr. Honey Trehan, who was the casting director for ‘Beyond the Clouds’. With his help, I did a few look tests with Majidi sir and now we’re here!
Q . Your latest release ‘Beyond The Clouds’ was directed by the legendary Majid Majidi. How was the workflow that you experienced with him?
A : It was a very intense yet creative experience! Majidi sir is a very versatile director. Sometimes he would be ultra specific about certain shots, and sometimes he would say, “This is the scene, go do it". Initially it really baffled me, but in retrospect I realize that as an actor it really keeps you on your toes, where you're able to emote in a more spontaneous and organic way.
Q . Now that your Hindi debut has finally come out, what are your plans for the future?
A : I aim to work in all kinds of films playing a variety of roles and characters. I will explore my range as an actor and also want to collaborate with artists and filmmakers whose work I appreciate and am inspired by.
Q . Are you a foodie? What is your most intense craving?
A : Yes, I am! After having travelled quite a bit and having explored different kind of cuisines, I've come to realize that what I enjoy eating most is Indian food. Indian food is also comfort food. I love chicken dum biryani. It's my go to dish. But when it comes to deserts, I really enjoy exploring different ones while I'm travelling. I was in Istanbul racently for the film festival there, and had this Kurdish dessert called ‘Kunefe' which is like a cheese pastry. It's the most heavenly thing I've ever had. I don't think I've ever tasted a sweetdish as amazing as that one, before or after.
Q . On a scale of 1-10, how much do you enjoy drinking? And what would be your favorite kind of alcohol, if you had to pick one?
A : I try not to drink too often because I workout and eat healthy. But I do enjoy it every once in while. I like pretty much all kinds of liquor, depending on where I am and what the occasion is. But I do particular enjoy trying out different kinds of cocktails!
