There is a point in almost every stoner’s life when his or her parents find out about their offspring consuming marijuana. While a lot of people talk to their parents and tell them that they smoke up, the others go through the same fate as me.
I used to hide my weed in a small fanny pack which was then hidden in my backpack. My dad couldn’t locate the charger for his MacBook so he decided to dig into my bad and look for mine.

I was getting stoned on the previous night at a Hip Hop gig in Bandra and I was so high that I forgot to close the fanny pack before placing it into my backpack. So the packet of weed could be seen the moment you open my bag.
By the time I woke up, my dad had already taken the packet in his custody. As I opened my eyes, I saw my mom sleeping by the edge of the bed and my dad standing by the window. And the first question that they asked me was, “Tu Kab Se Drugs Kar Raha Hai?”
A lot of people make the mistake of telling their parents that the weed doesn’t belong to them and that they are holding on to it for a friend. But instead, I told them its not drugs, its weed. It's organic and it's not a drug per se.
The next question that came my way was, “What other drugs do you consume?” I swore off chemical drugs just by looking at the state of people who used acid or ecstasy so weed is the only narcotic I consume. When I told them about the same, they wouldn’t believe me and decided to get me tested anyway.
My dad approached a doctor friend of his who arranged for a discreet test. A guy came home to collect my blood samples and also a bit of pee and I did not hesitate giving my fluids for testing as I didn’t have anything to worry about.
The main problem with my parents is that they think of Marijuana as a rabid wolf while in reality its a cute puppy. I knew that my parents would take me to my shrink to talk this out. And over the weekend I thought a lot about what could happen to me.
I have been voicing my opinion on Marijuana with my articles on BINGE for months now and I knew for a fact that I was not going to betray the cause. I decided to stand firm and be pro-marijuana even when I am confronted.
When we visited the shrink, he asked us why we came this time and I told him that my parents caught me with pot. He looked straight at my parents and asked them, “So? That's it?”
Over an intense hour-long session, I told the shrink about how Marijuana helps me look at things from a different perspective while I'm writing and I also told him that it widens my horizons. I also told him that I Dj at a few venues in Mumbai and weed helps me get into a flow and my sets turn out streamlined.
He then went on to explain to my parents how cannabis is not addictive and how alcohol and cigarettes will do me worse. My parents seemed to be a bit calm especially after I confronted my father about the stash I once found in his pocket. He also admitted having smoked back in the day.
The shrink also told my parents that if they drink as per their free will, they don’t have the right to stop me from smoking up. But eventually, my parents opened up a bit about the issue.
I am pretty sure my mom read up a bit about Marijuana as we had a conversation about getting high. She asked me if there is something safe she can try to get high and I offered to make brownies for her. While she seemed amused by the idea, she did ask me for the recipe.
And since we are talking about it, I have a feeling that eventually, my family will be a 420 friendly household! I think that the main problem is that our parents don't really know what drugs are or how they work. They have formed a generalized opinion based on movies and other such sources that always show drugs in a bad light. Once people understand what marijuana is, I'm pretty sure they would change their opinion about it.
