Olympic Athlete Dutee Chand Is Abandoned By Her Own Family For Coming Out Of The Closet

Usually, when something like this happens, our politicians pour in to comment and debate about it. But it seems like the elections are keeping them busy.

For those of you who don’t know Dutee Chand, she is an Indian Athlete who represents the country at international sports events. Dutee was forced to undergo gender testing as a teenager and was diagnosed with hyperandrogenism, a condition that produces male hormones in women. Dutee was barred from competing under International Association of Athletics Federation rules.

Dutee then took her case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport which ruled in her favor. She then competed in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta where she won silver medals in the 100m and 200m women’s races. Last week Dutee revealed that she was in a same-sex relationship with a girl from her village in Odisha. She became the first Indian sportsperson to admit having a same-sex relationship and stood up as an Idol.

After she came out and made her relationship public, her family threatened to abandon her and her sister even says that Dutee’s partner has ‘threatened and blackmailed’ her.

Dutee’s 19-year-old partner is studying in Bhubaneshwar and they have known each other for five years. She said that they met because they are both athletes and over the years they grew really close to each other. Dutee says that her partner is the most important person for her. Dutee’s elder sister threatened to throw her out of the house but Dutee says that she won’t bow down to family pressure as she s not doing anything wrong and she is proud of her relationship.

Usually, when something like this happens, our politicians pour in to comment and debate about it. But it seems like the elections are keeping them busy. Election news is pretty dark but Dutee managed to come out like a beacon of light for the LGBTQ community as an idol they can look up to.
