PM May Give Up His Social Media Accounts On Sunday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is considering “giving up" his social media accounts on Sunday, he announced on Twitter. This is the first time that Modi, who has more than 130 million followers across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, has spoken about such a step. “This Sunday, thinking of giving up my social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram & YouTube. Will keep you all posted," Modi tweeted on Monday. Modi did not specify if he meant he was staying away from his social media accounts for a day on Sunday. Although it is unclear what prompted Modi to take the step, it could be an attempt to start a dialogue with people about social media use. Modi has often asked people not to use social media to spread rumours and false information and to ensure that their language does not offend others. During his visit to his constituency Varanasi in 2018, Modi told volunteers of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that there have been times when the language used by some people on social media platforms has gone against the norms of a decent society. The Prime Minister has often pointed out that there have been times when women have faced negative comments from social media users.
