Signs You May Be A Homophobe And Not Even Be Aware Of It

Even if you mean well, any sort of behavior that could possibly offend the LGBT community will no longer excuse your behavior no matter how good or kind you may otherwise be.

We have all grown up with the idea of how ‘normal’ people are, where everyone equated the word with a straight sexual orientation. And therefore, the reluctance to accept a concept of homosexuality becomes an issue for all of us, until we open our eyes and minds to the world and love. However, you may still have some inner hesitation in acceptation, and could be a homophobe and not even know it.

You may not have bad intentions for the people from the community, and perhaps are even indifferent until someone you know is gay. But any sort of behavior that could possibly offend the LGBT community will no longer excuse your behavior no matter how good or kind you may otherwise be.

Here are signs to know if you are a homophobe:

If you have a gay friend, co worker, cousin, even sibling but still think that queer people should not be able to get married, then you are totally anti-gay.

If you’re fine with queer people as long as you don’t have to see them kissing or holding hands, then you are a homophobe.

If you think that inside queer people there is anything lurking, even though small, that causes us to have any less integrity or humanity than straight people have, then you are homophobic.

If you have an issue with queer people and whom or how we love or live or get off — whether you’re a grandma in Detroit or the Pope in the Vatican — then you’re encouraging homophobia.

If you don’t have anything against queer people but wouldn’t want a gay man being your son or daughter’s class teacher, then you are anti-gay.

All of us have been going through the dirt and sheer hate of a homophobic society for centuries. What queer people do is unnatural or corrupt or destructive is all we have been told in our lives. It is never easy for people to slough all of that off. And even you may be struggling with some of this stuff, it does not necessarily make you a monster or even a bad person. It just means you have got lots of work to do on your own self. It is time you get to it!
