Spiders are beautiful creatures. The tiny arachnids are some of the most intelligent species on the planet. They have been designed in a way that they could survive in the harshest of conditions. There are thousands of species of spiders on the planet and if all of them come together and form some sort of an alliance, humans are going to be in real trouble. Imagine the movie Arachnophobia happening in reality...minus the giant mutated spiders!
As per a research conducted by the Martin Nyffeler of the University of Basel in Switzerland and Klaus Birkhofer of Lund University in Sweden and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in Germany, if spiders really wanted to, they could eat the entire human population of the planet in one year!
I am really fond of spiders! I love rescuing the little critters and setting them free in the wild. But sometimes, when you take a spider in your hands and look into its eyes, it gets attached to you and won't let go! Spiders are considered as pests. People are really afraid of the critters and over the years, countless movies have shown spiders as the bad guys. But they are not!
Spiders are actually our friends. If you ever wonder why mosquitoes, bugs, flies suddenly stopped coming in your house, you probably have a spider somewhere in your house that is trapping them in its web. Now, coming back to the theory about spiders consuming the entire human race in a year, here is how the researchers came to a conclusion.
First, they calculated the approximate number of spiders on the entire planet. If every single spider on the planet is put on a scale, they would weigh more than 25 million tonnes! That is 478 times the weight of the Titanic. So you can Imagine the number of spiders that are there on the planet. Now, these spiders have dietary needs.
The theory suggests that, if you add up the weight eaten by the world’s entire spider population in a single year, it is more than the combined weight of every human on the planet! So humans are screwed if one-day spiders decide that they want to eat us! But like I said, spiders like humans. They wouldn't attack you unless you provoke them and if you carefully approach one, you will make a new friend who will keep your house pest free!
So the next time you see a spider in your house, don't squish it! place a plastic cup on it and wait for it to go in the cup. You can then put the cup outside and set the critter free.
