In a country where “I got some stuff, let's go back to my place” is becoming the most common and effective pickup line. An era where everyone from graphic designers, artist and even college mates leading the project loon by Google are getting high on a regular basis, I wanted to understand how the drug that I believed made me procrastinate days into months in college and almost made me flunk 2 semesters has suddenly become ‘the shit’ that made six thousand students in the UK score much better than the sober ones. I wanted to understand did I do something wrong when I smoked the old ‘Ganja’ and the biggest question should I be smoking again?
Having heard how this ‘god made plant’ had the property of curing cancer it was hard for me to believe that inhaling smoke into my lungs has no harmful effects, so I wanted to understand the risk associated with smoking the green. I started with reading articles and watching a few videos but more I watched, more I got confused, so I decided to talk to a family doc, after an hour of conversation it became a little clear that its the way we consumer ganja that makes all the difference. Ganja is either consumed as a bong hit, a joint or most recently dabbed, all of which vaporizes ganja in your lungs. The other ways include candies, space cakes, and oils that can be consumed orally. So when consumed orally, like the 7years old girl in Oregon, pot might have the ability to shrink the tumor but if you are toking in a pipe, stop kidding yourself if you believe that you are killing cancer. Just remember when you are inhaling deeper and holding breath longer than cigarette smoke, is just going to deposit tar from the combustion of any materials. If you’re still in denial, just remember this next time you get smokers coughs after a night full of blazing.
Understanding the effects of toking I was now keen on understanding the mindset of people that make them smoke up quite often and yet still excel in their fields. I spoke to P, a high paid graphic designer and someone that I have never seen without a joint in the three years I have known her.
“Yes ganja definitely helps me work better, I look into smallest of the details and rectify it. I mean of course, there are times when I have smoked 5-6 joints basically a lot of weed, that time I just sit back and can’t work. But the other times when I have smoked 2 joints of Sativa, I get in my zone and finish of work that have been left incomplete for days. This works even better when the deadline is close.” When asked if there is a particular pattern for success, “When I am working that's how much I need, I will not smoke for 4-5 hours on the other hand when I am having fun I need a joint an hour.” After talking to P, it was clear that she believed that Ganja made her focus and think deeply but it was also clear that it only helped when consumed in smaller dosage and with a deadline on your head.
Still trying to understand the mindset I can across A, a musician by night and an archaeologist student by the day, “I think of toking as a reward system when I have had a heavy day of work and I have done well, I come back home smoke 1-2 joint have a good time. On the other hand, the days I am creating music, I wake up and smoke a joint and share one every hour whilst producing. Music is a passion for me and I can be in my space after a joint. Also, I am able here tunes very diversely. When we are not smoked up we will create the same kind of music, I.e. same progressive build up with a drop in the end. It’s only when you smoke up creativity comes out and you are able to feel the song.” For A, it was clear that Ganja helped him think freely and it's only when you free your mind the creativity arises. As I wrapped my head around artists smoking ganja, it was time to know what people with regular jobs think.
“Is it the maal or are you the maal” says D a Marketing Head, as I talk him about how consumption of weed helped in ‘getting shit done’. I smoke every day, I don’t smoke it to get shit done. I smoke it because I enjoy the high and I can still get my shit done when I am high. Also, you won’t become Bon Jovi if you don’t have the talent” Do you take a smaller dosage whilst working? “ I think human by nature judge themselves, they worry about what people will think, but when you are smoked up you don’t worry about anyone. You are much relaxed. You micro-dose on acid to reach a weed high if you micro-dose on weed the f**k high you will get.”
After speaking to P, A and D, I could see why creative heads can smoke up, be in their space, create something beautiful and get away with it, but what happens when you have to lead projects? I had no other option but to try it myself, I knocked on my flatmate's door, who has previously convinced me on multiple occasion to smoke a puff, and asked him to roll a joint. Crush, grind, mix tobacco and here it was ready to blaze. I wanted to see if I will be able to plan my month, delegate task to my employees and understand the bright future ahead. As I smoked the first puff after almost 4 years, I was immediately taken back to college days, I had to smoke a little more before I could get back to work and assess my delegation skills. 10 minutes and 12 drags later, the room became smokier, music became louder and I was in ‘the zone’. The zone where I focused too much about what others around me were looking at me and started thinking deep about CARP, the zone which can be least described as relaxed but more towards paranoid, the zone where I would delegate task if someone taught me how to talk. The zone where sleeping seemed like the only option to get out of this high.
About 55% of the youth love to “tok” on a daily basis in Indian cities according to the survey showed in a YouTube video, but after my journey, I was certain there is no one way to success, everyone had different capacity, tolerance and a complete contrasting belief towards ganja. Where P, though 2 joints were essential to get shit done; A, used dope as a reward system. Everyone had their own reason to smoke up but it was clear to me for a person who loves to keep it real and has five colleagues waiting for feedback, its probably not the best thing to do.
