Family WhatsApp groups are usually well-meaning, but their Good Morning forwards are the bane of existence. Old-fashioned font choices edited onto flowers with a not-quite-deep quote; what's not to hate?
Hence, @sodonechilling decided to take the two worst things about family WhatsApp groups- these forwards and their ridiculously regressive political views- to create a universal solution. Here's an example:
As you can see, everything is the same, save the quote. The pictures seem no different from a regular WhatsApp forward. However, as the receiver goes on to read the quote in smaller text, they instead find a wake-up call.
The quote is a statistic or statement that highlights political and social issues in the country that everyone should know. The point, therefore, is to help people face the facts they otherwise straight up ignore or at least, attempt to.
@sodonechilling is a crowd-sourced page, which means that all followers and users are welcome to contribute. They have created a hashtag, #newwhatsappuniversity, for people to put up their own versions of these posts.
This allows people to engage, interact, and participate in the entire process. #newwhatsappuniversity, of course, is a reference to WhatsApp University. That's a term for when people gain all their information from unverified and often biased WhatsApp messages.
This is a great initiative that has just the touch of cynical humour that appeals to a lot of our generation's aware and active population while tackling real issues. So, the next time you have an argument with an ignorant and stubborn family member over political issues, send them a sweet Good Morning text in return.
