Ultimate Guide to Iconic Street Sandwiches in Mumbai

Every vendor has their patent chutney and masala that gets them to this list of Iconic Street Sandwiches in Mumbai.

The life savior while we are hungry, be it breakfast lunch, or dinner, sandwiches are the first preference for a quick healthy tasty treat - especially for people in Mumbai. Bread in Mumbai is a staple. A lot of times, Chai and bread is a full meal for many. So, when that bread is filled with fresh vegetables and some chutney - it surely adds up to the value. A typical Bombay sandwich is convenient, as well as delicious. It's good on the pocket and you get a different taste for every sandwich vendor you try, because of the chutney. Some chutneys are spicy, some are sweet and a lot of people prefer the sandwich without any chutney - just vegetables and butter. You absolutely can't forget the very important sandwich masala which makes or breaks a sandwich. Every vendor has their patent chutney and masala - that differentiates them from the ordinary.

A sandwich typically is made out of two slices of bread (if in Mumbai - typically Wibbs bread) - with some butter, chutney on it. You can put as many vegetables as you want between those bread slices - a basic sandwich will have potatoes, tomatoes, onion, beetroot, and some cucumber. You can also ask them to add some cheese. If you are looking for something healthier - can add cabbages, bell peppers, carrots, and every other vegetable you know. Paneer, mayonnaise, samosas are also part of a good sandwich. You can have it raw (sada) or get it cooked on a Hand Toaster or get it Grilled. The options are infinite.  When it comes to street food, Sandwich tops the list.

Be it a chilly cheese toast or a paneer mayonnaise toast the variations available, have something to offer for everyone. The best part about Sandwiches is that they are easily available on every corner (nukkad pe) of Mumbai streets. As they are available in plenty, the competition is also tuff. There are a few vendors that excel in the art of making the sandwich and a lot of times, people prefer the one that they have been eating from for years - be it below the office, home, or outside the college. Noting down the tastiest sandwiches we have tried in Mumbai -

1. Jai Jawan Stall

Two slices of bread, a combination of juicy vegetables, and a galore of cheese and mayonnaise. Woahh. A must-try is the Veg grill with salad dressing, mayonnaise and cheese, and the Nutella sandwich. The place is decently priced and is right opposite one of the famous theatres in town. You will see a lot of young people standing around the stall.
