When you think of environment enthusiasts, you typically think of people who'd give up plastic straws to save the turtles or make an effort to recycle daily. However, these eco-conscious people tend to go a step further than any of us could even think of. Ecosexuality or Sexecology tends to be a radical form of environmentalism wherein an individual begins to think of the Earth as their lover.
History of Ecosexuality
Pioneers of this ' environmental movement', Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkles, have co-written the eco sex manifesto in 2011 which basically outlines what it is like to be an Ecosexual. Since then, their career consists of promoting this form of eco-eroticism through social activism, performance art, walking tours and even weddings where someone can get married to the Sun, Moon, Stars or even the Earth. In fact, Stephens and Sprinkles themselves got married to dirt in an eco sex wedding in 2014.
While Ecosexuality began to gain momentum in 2016, it has only been growing since then. Since this 'trending' sexuality is not understood by many, here’s are a few things you ought to know about it.
Ecosexuals view Earth as their lover and not their mother
We have often heard the phrase- 'Mother Earth' however ecosexuals tend to choose to look at the earth as their lover instead. While this may seem odd to someone, there is some logic behind it. According to ecosexuals, our current scenario of climate change is a serious threat and our planet needs more love and care than ever. They believe that just like a relationship with one's lover, "we should respect the earth for all that it does for us"
Ecosexuality is a legitimate identity that many identify with
With over 100,000 people in the world identifying themselves as an 'Ecosexual', people have started to consider it as an identity as legitimate as being straight, gay or bi. Even the manifesto says- "For some of us being ecosexual is our primary (sexual) identity, whereas for others it is not. Ecosexuals can be GBTQI, heterosexual, asexual, queer and/or other. We invite and encourage ecosexuals to come out. We are everywhere. We are polymorphous and pollen-amorous"
In fact at the San Fransico pride parade in 2015, they even petitioned for the 'E' to be added in LGBTQIA+ acronym. The main essence of this sexual orientation is not only accepting yourself but also accepting the nature around you as a part of you and your sexual identity.
Do Excosexuals have sex with the Earth?
Since being an ecosexual is basically about showing the Earth some love, this love could manifest itself physically for some people. This physical relationship could include a lot of things according to the official Ecosex manifesto. It says "We shamelessly hug trees, massage the earth with our feet, and talk erotically to plants. We are skinny dippers, sun worshippers, and stargazers. We caress rocks, are pleasured by waterfalls and admire the Earth's curves. We make love with the Earth through our senses. We celebrate our E-spots. We are very dirty."
Being an ecosexual does not mean you only derive pleasure from 'being one' with the environment and nature, it could also involve intercourse with a partner and involving nature into that in some form. It might be something about having the tactile feeling of dirt or grass on your skin, or knowing that you're involving nature into your sexual experience." Dr Reid, a sociologist, tells Health. So if you're looking to spice things up, having a quickie with your partner in the outdoors could be just the kink that you need.
There is a broad spectrum to Ecosexuality
Pleasure is subjective and for some ecosexuals engaging in acts that 'help' the environment could be what gets them off. Buying biodegradable and organic products could be a way in which such people satisfy their sexual attraction to Earth as they feel they are doing their part in saving it.
"A person that expresses their ecosexuality in this way may purchase an environmentally friendly sex toy, all-natural sheets, or even organic tampons," says Holly Richards, a sex therapist. Since their main desire is helping the earth, any action of their to contribute to the betterment of the environment can turn them on.
Ecosexuals believe their way could stop climate change
In an effort to getting people to see Earth as their 'lover, ecosexuals hope that this dynamic could be beneficial in combatting climate change. They believe that if we care about the Earth as a partner, we would be more invested in protecting and taking care of it. Sprinkles tells Teen Vogue "Ecosexuality is making the earth an urgent sexual matter. Instead of Mother Earth, where the earth comforts you, the earth is your lover - on your level - putting the responsibility on you to uphold your side of the relationship, [it's] revolutionary."
The need to promote and make people aware of safer and more sustainable options to their everyday products remains the main goal for ecosexuals in combatting climate change. While this ecosexual movement has been criticised by many, it's success lies in remaining apolitical and simply about its the aim - becoming one with the environment in an effort to connect with it and in turn, save it.
Ecosexuality has been around for quite some time
While this could be the first time you have heard of this ecosexuality movement, it started to become 'mainstream' when the manifesto was first written way back in 2011. Even google trend data shows that this word has been searched so many time in 2017, that it became a trending topic right until the beginning of 2019.
The topic of ecosexuality had come up with one of my friends and they responded by saying ‘how desperate does one have to be to hook up with a tree’ but I think there is much more to this sexuality than physical attraction to nature. Whether it is masturbating with water pressure or under a waterfall, using biodegradable products or literally having sex with a tree- an ecosexual will find eroticism in nature and they use this eroticism to make saving the environment ‘fun and sexy’. While the idea takes some time to wrap your head around it, if it gets people to respect the planet and participate in saving the environment while turning you on, it seems like a win-win for everyone.
