A viral photo of Sen. Bernie Sanders has become the most magical meme of President Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony. Wearing mittens made out of recycled materials and a warm winter jacket, US Sen. Bernie Sanders pulled off a casual inauguration outfit whilst others were seen wearing suits and designer coats.
Many people quickly highlighted the 79-year-old independent Vermont senator’s look and created endless memes. But the senator is fully aware of this and he’s mostly just glad for all the good press it’s bringing to the Vermont mitten industry.
“In Vermont, we dress warm — we know something about the cold, and we’re not so concerned about good fashion. We want to keep warm, and that’s what I did today,” the Senator told anchor Gayle King.
The meme started with a wire photo of Sen. Bernie Sanders, sitting on a folding chair watching President Joe Biden’s inauguration. The temperature in Washington, DC was in the 40s, so he’s bundled up with a coat and mittens, and he’s sitting socially distanced from everyone else.
Something about Sanders’ chilly body language, his oversized wool mittens, and the fact that he was sitting entirely alone made the photo irresistible as meme material.
Here are a few creative ones:
Bernie’s meme is so popular, in fact, that a bunch of celebrities are now getting in on the action, including Guy Feiri, Whoopi Goldberg, Allison Janney, and even the band Haim.
There has, of course, also been fan art, in a shockingly short amount of time.
