World Happiness Report 2020 Ranks India 139 Out Of 149 Countries

The World Happiness Report in 2020 revolved around the effects and the impact of the pandemic on the lives and happiness quotient of the individuals.

Released by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the World Happiness Report 202o has ranked India 139 out of the 149 countries in the list, with a previous ranking of 140 in 2019. It was also seen that Finland once again bagged the spot of the world's happiest country. This report is a survey on how happy citizens in each state perceive themselves to be, and it gives all the 149 countries a global ranking. In 2020, the report revolved around the effects and the impact of the pandemic on the lives and happiness quotient of the individuals.

How is the World Happiness Report calculated?

Based on the parameters of gross domestic product per person, healthy life expectancy, and the opinions of residents, the report distributes the rankings. In the survey, respondents are asked to mark the degree of social support received, the freedom to exercise their own choices, the level of corruption in the society, and their generosity on a scale of 1-10. The report suggests that life evaluations are the most informative measures for an international analysis as they examine the quality of life “in a more complete and stable way than emotional reports based on daily experiences.”

“Our aim was two-fold, first to focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the structure and quality of people’s lives, and second to describe and evaluate how governments all over the world have dealt with the pandemic. In particular, we try to explain why some countries have done so much better than others," the report said in a statement.

“There have been both in-person and telephone samples for India, with the in-person responses being lower than telephone responses, while significantly higher than in-person responses in 2019. Hence the reversal in 2020 of the longer-term slide in Indian life evaluations was not attributable to mode effects," it added.

For the fourth consecutive year, Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world. This nation is followed by Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and Norway, while people in the war-torn nation of Afganistan are the most unhappy with their lives followed by Zimbabwe (148), Rwanda (147), Botswana (146) and Lesotho (145). According to the report, Pakistan is in 105th place, Bangladesh in 101st place, and China in 84th place, while one of the richest nations i.e. United states stands at 19th Position on the happiness scale.
