You Could Have To Pay Rs 23,000 In Fines For Illegal Parking In Mumbai!

The new traffic rules have been implemented from July 7

Mumbai is a city where an estimated 3 million vehicles run every day. In a city that its as densly populated as mumbai, barely has space for people to live and because of the massive number of vehicles in the city, parking issues are one of the BMC's main problems. Be it getting into a local train or stuffing your vehicles in empty nooks and crannies on streets, adjusting into tiny spaces is a Mumbai culture that most of us have embraced.

But illegal parking is a concern that affects all our lives. Were pretty sure youve been stuck in a traffic jam for what seems like hours only to find out that the whole choke point is caused because of a prick who parked his car wrong. Illegaly parked cars also pose a threat to traffic as they are often parked at blind curves. A lot of these vehicles also add a major inconvienence to pedestrains.

In order to hopefully reduce the number of illegal parking cases, the BMC and the Mumbai Traffic Police have implemented new laws from the 7th of July 2019 which will bump up the fines for illegal parking. Depending on your vehicle, the fine could cost anywhere between Rs 5,000 to Rs 23,000. The penalty is applicable on all vehicles parked in a 500-metre radius of the 26 authorised public parking lots and 20 designated BEST depots in the city. The fine constitutes the actual fine for illegal parking and towing charges.

Thanks to their new digitized system, your parking violation will reflect on the driving license to which the vehicle has been registered. So even if you dont find your vehicle towed or just sitting there with a tyre boot on, you will still get a message on your phone asking you to pay a fine.

We think that this is a great change in our traffic laws and hopefully this will make people park their vehicles in proper parking spaces instead of streets and will make our roads cleaner, clearer and safer.
